About the Institute

The institute is the specialist Learned Society for sound and communications engineers. It was founded in 1948 and is now an entirely autonomous Institute, run by a Council elected by its members.

Aims and objectives

  1. To unite those professionally engaged in the sound, video, communications, entertainment lighting and staging industries.
  2. To maintain and to raise technical standards throughout the profession.
  3. To disseminate technical and professional information through the publication of papers and by means of conferences, seminars and training courses.
  4. To promote educational and training programmes for those seeking advancement in the profession and to assist career development and continuing professional development within the industry.
  5. To promote the advancement and application of science and technology within the profession in the interests of society at large.
  6. To present the Institute as an authoritative and influential professional body, representing trained, qualified and experienced practitioners within the profession.
  7. To establish and maintain a code of conduct in professional activities, embodying high ethical standards and concern for the environmental and sociological impacts of professional activities.
  8. To protect and promote the interests of members, collectively and individually.
